To Jacintha Kruc, painting murals is about finding a deeper connection with a space as a canvas, but also as a location inhabited by individuals and their community.
The Nasturtium mural was created for the York Mural Festival, a three-day celebration of public art in downtown York. The festival was a vibrant and immersive experience, with artists painting side by side, filling the city with color, energy, and creativity.
This mural was painted in Royal Square, where many muralists worked in close proximity. The collaborative atmosphere, live music, and interactions with passersby made the process feel dynamic and engaging.
“I chose the nasturtium plant as my theme because of its resilience and vibrancy. Nasturtiums flourish in unexpected places, much like public art transforms overlooked spaces,” she says. “They are also edible, adding spice and flavor to food, which felt like a great connection to York’s lively food scene and nearby restaurants.”
To Kruc, the Nasturtium’s red and yellow flowers represent the constant diverse art, music, and food that make Royal Square the creative hub it is.
“This piece reflects the way food, art, and culture intertwine in a city’s fabric,” she says.
